Electronic cigarette banned in Catalan hospitals

The Catalan Health Service ( CatSalut) has banned the use , promotion and sale of electronic cigarettes in Catalan hospitals and clinics.

   The ban affects the network of centers, services and establishments of comprehensive public health system use of Catalunya ( SISCAT ) , after it went into effect Wednesday Instruction 08/ 2013 .

   The move comes as the CatSalut believes that the proliferation of these devices may jeopardize the progress made in recent years in the " de-normalization of snuff in society " , and the lack of security in their consumption , reported the Ministry of Health this Thursday in a statement.

   " No study has demonstrated the safety of its use nor for people who eat other people and their environment," alleged CatSalut , who added that there is no scientifically proven evidence certifying that the electronic cigarette is useful for quit.

   The consumption of snuff is one of the major public health problems and a responsible factor of about 9,000 deaths each year in Catalunya , in addition to scientific studies have shown that electronic cigarettes contain the same substances as nicotine snuff and other elements toxic .

   Different entities of reference in the field of Health , have been advised to be banned healthcare facilities and have recommended to users who do not use them until there is no data showing that it is a safe product and a competent body is certification.

   CatSalut has issued this statement based on the Public Health Agency of Catalunya in November proposed measures to electronic cigarettes have the same restrictions as the snuff in access to minors , advertising and sponsorship , and the enclosed public spaces.

   The statement also follows the precautionary principle of public health law and the principles of health promotion and disease prevention which includes the Health Management Act of Catalunya.
